Commontide

For Guidance

O God, by whom the meek are guided in judgment, and light rises up in darkness for the godly: Grant us, in all our doubts and uncertainties, the grace to ask what you would have us do, that the Spirit of wisdom may save us from all false choices; that in your light we may see light, and in your straight path we may not stumble; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Third Sunday of Epiphany

Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the call of our Savior Jesus Christ and proclaim to all people the Good News of his salvation, that we and the whole world may perceive the glory of his marvelous works; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A missional prayer written for the 1979 American Book of Common Prayer, attributed to Massey H. Shepherd Jr., the leading liturgical scholar who shaped that revision over three decades. It asks for the grace to answer Christ's call as readily as the first disciples did, and to proclaim the Good News so that the whole world may perceive what God is doing.
