Commontide

For Guidance

O God, by whom the meek are guided in judgment, and light rises up in darkness for the godly: Grant us, in all our doubts and uncertainties, the grace to ask what you would have us do, that the Spirit of wisdom may save us from all false choices; that in your light we may see light, and in your straight path we may not stumble; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Good Friday — The Solemn Collects

Gracious God, the comfort of all who sorrow, the strength of all who suffer: Let the cry of those in misery and need come to you, that they may find your mercy present with them in all their afflictions; and give us, we pray, the strength to serve them for the sake of him who suffered for us, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Amen.

This Good Friday prayer for "the world's needs" has very old roots. Its English wording was written for the 1979 Book of Common Prayer, but it closely follows the last of ten ancient Roman intercessions prayed on Good Friday since at least the early Middle Ages, one asking God to comfort the sorrowful and strengthen the weary. The 2019 ACNA prayer book kept the prayer word for word, only refreshing the introduction that leads into it.
