A prayer that has closed Anglican intercessions for nearly five centuries. Thomas Cranmer wrote the core in 1549 to sum up all the Church's petitions through "our only Mediator and Advocate" – a phrase drawn directly from 1 Timothy 2:5 and 1 John 2:1, with the word "only" added by Cranmer to make a pointed Reformation claim that Christ alone carries our prayers to the Father.
